The Legend of the Key Makers and Chasers
Many of you may be asking, what exactly is a Chaser? Chasers were a once race of humans, more commonly known as the Key Makers, the forgers of Key Blades. Three Chasers are seen in the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts 2, which you can view here.
The Key Makers were believed to possess great magical skills and to have hearts filled with light, and created the Key Blades used today. Legend has it that they used these key blades to seal the hearts of worlds and peace reigned throughout the lands. However, as all good things come to an end, so did the Key Makers. Three people within the Key Makers believed that Key Blades were being used incorrectly and started to use the Key Blades for their own purposes; using the darkness in people’s hearts as a means to control them.
And so began the Key Blade wars. Many worlds were destroyed in the battle and eventually, the darkness lurking inside of hearts began to take a corporeal form in the shape of Heartless. The Heartless eventually turned on those controlling them and ripped half their hearts from their bodies, leaving them neither Heartless nor human, but Chasers. Their bodies became deformed and to hide their shame, they forged themselves armor to hide their hideous forms. Their faces remained intact, however, as a twisted reminder of what they had become.
As for the Key Makers themselves, they were not so lucky. They were eventually wiped out by the Heartless and the three Chasers. Legend says that the spirit of those Key Makers reside in those who are chosen to wield the Key Blade, the purest of heart.
